Digestive Health: 5 Foods to Stay Away From - AloeCure

No one has perfect digestion all the time.  As much as we would like perfect digestive comfort, we realize that occasional bouts of indigestion are a part of normal life that comes from over-eating, drinking, or just eating the wrong things. However, if it happens frequently, you may want to talk to your doctor as it could indicate a more serious or chronic digestive issue that falls outside of the scope of this article.

A healthy digestive system will allow you to break down and pass waste comfortably. If you're eating less of your favorite foods, you should know that there is a wide selection of food choices available to meet any craving or satisfy any taste bud. You may also benefit from adding a dietary supplement to help naturally support and maintain your digestive system.

Finding the foods that disrupt your digestion and cutting them out is key to maintaining your digestive comfort. But don't worry; you won't have to starve! We've compiled a list of alternatives to the 5 most common foods that cause indigestion:

HEAVY CARBOHYDRATES

Corn, pasta, potatoes, white bread

One of the main culprits that may temporarily disrupt digestive bliss is a diet heavy in carbohydrates. Starchy food like corn, pasta, potatoes, noodles, and white breads can wreak havoc on your digestive system. Carbs are loaded with difficult-to-digest sugars.

HIGH CARB ALTERNATIVES

Opting for healthy complex carbs and whole grains with more fiber will satisfy your craving for carbohydrate-heavy food without upsetting your stomach.

  • Brown Rice
  • Couscous
  • Whole grain bread

SATURATED FATS

Fried foods, red meat, gravy

A list of foods causing stomach issues would not be complete without a mention of fatty foods and the adverse effect they have on one’s digestive system. Any deep fried foods—chicken, fish, potatoes—can be a source of discomfort. Fatty meats, hearty gravies, pastries, rich cream sauces or soups, are all potential sources of foods that can get your stomach out of its groove.

HIGH FAT ALTERNATIVES

Opt for lean white meats and always prepare them grilled, broiled, baked, or steamed for a tasty meal that is healthier and likely to support balanced digestion.

  • Chicken
  • Pork
  • Turkey
  • Fish
  • Olive oil

DAIRY

Cheese, ice cream, milk

A diet high in cheeses, ice cream, milk, and creamy salad dressings is not the best thing you should be doing for your health.  Not only are these foods high in calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol, they are also hard for your body to break down and digest, which isn't what you want most likely if you are reading this :). It may also be a trigger for those that are lactose intolerant, which is caused by the sugar lactose found in dairy products. If you think this may apply to you or you experience regular discomfort after consuming dairy, it might be time to call your physician and get tested to see if you have a dairy or lactose alergy.

DAIRY ALTERNATIVES

Although still dairy-based, yogurt is a healthy pro-biotic alternative to ice cream that can be just as delicious without the massive amounts of sugar that can disrupt digestion. We recommend dairy alternatives that are free of added sugars to help support stomach comfort! Note that if you are lactose intolerant, you'll want to avoid dairy products altogether.

  • Yogurt
  • Rice Milk
  • Almond Milk
  • Coconut milk

ACIDIC VEGETABLES & FRUITS

Tomatoes, oranges, grapefruits, lemons/limes

Even some fruits and vegetables can trigger gas, burping, or diarrhea. Tomatoes, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and any juices made from them tend to be quite acidic and can disturb the balance of your stomach acidity.

ACIDIC FRUIT & VEGGIE ALTERNATIVES

Opt for fruits that are low in acidity and replace tomatoes with butternut squash. You can achieve a similar taste and consistency in almost any recipe without upsetting your stomach.

  • Melons
  • Bananas
  • Butternut squash

COFFEE

Any product made with coffee will contain the caffeine we all crave, but also comes with a significant dose of acidity. Due to coffee's popularity and how often it is consumed, it is one of the most common acidic foods or beverages we consume and therefore a regular contributor to unbalanced stomach acidity.

COFFEE ALTERNATIVES

Yerba mate is an excellent coffee substitute that packs just as much of a caffeine punch with reduced acidity. Green tea also provides caffeine without the heavy acidity present in coffee.

  • Yerba mate
  • Green tea

DO I HAVE TO STOP EATING ALL THESE?
